Shah Rukh Khan celebrated his return to the spotlight by winning Best Actor at the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards held in Abu Dhabi.
Co-hosting the event, the 58-year-old actor received the coveted award for his performance in the action thriller Jawan, which highlighted the five-hour ceremony.
“It’s good to be back,” Khan expressed to an enthusiastic audience in the UAE’s capital, home to a substantial Indian community. “I love awards; I’m greedy about awards… I think I have a little happiness from the audience this year because I worked (again) after a long time,” he added.
The event also saw “Animal,” directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, winning Best Picture and five other awards, including Best Supporting Actor for Bollywood veteran Anil Kapoor. Rani Mukerji was recognized as Best Actress for her role in “Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway,” Vidhu Vinod Chopra took home Best Director for “12th Fail.”
The event, which concluded at 2:30 AM, featured Khan’s comedy skits with actor Vicky Kaushal, vibrant dance performances, and numerous commercial endorsements. Shahid Kapoor made a dramatic entrance on a motorbike, and when Khan appeared, the venue erupted with fireworks and visual effects, including a giant crown above his head.
Bollywood’s Evolving Landscape
Khan’s return to cinema comes when Bollywood, a longstanding powerhouse of Indian cinema and a significant cultural exporter, faces new challenges. These include rising competition from regional film industries and the growing popularity of independent films, like Payal Kapadia’s “All We Imagine as Light,” which won the Grand Prix at Cannes in May.
Bollywood’s traditional cinema-based model is also contending with the surge of streaming platforms such as Netflix, which offers a rich array of Indian content, including eight films and 14 series. According to Elara Capital, box office revenues dropped by up to 35% in the first half of 2024 compared to the previous year despite 2023’s strong performance post-COVID.
Abu Dhabi hosted the IIFA Awards for the third consecutive year. The awards began in 2000 and have rarely been held in India.
