Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi has been booked in eight other cases.
According to reports, a specialized unit of the Lahore Police arrived at Adiala Jail to take custody of the former foreign minister, who is currently detained in connection with the cases dated May 9.
Shah was detained on August 20, 2023, concerning the cypher case. Despite being denied bail by both the trial court and the High Court, the Supreme Court approved his release on December 23. However, due to administrative delays in processing his release order, he remained incarcerated until December 27.
During this period, an order under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) was issued and later withdrawn by the Deputy Commissioner of Rawalpindi. Subsequently, Qureshi was re-arrested by the Rawalpindi Police on May 9, this time concerning the GHQ case, shortly after his release from Adiala Jail.
Qureshi was sentenced in the cipher case on January 30. He has since appealed this decision, and the Islamabad High Court is set to hear final arguments on May 28.
Additionally, on May 9, 2024, Lahore Police arrested him in connection with incidents dating back to May 9, 2023. Interestingly, it has been reported, and widely acknowledged, that Qureshi was in Karachi on the date of the alleged incidents.
This sequence of events raises several critical questions about the timing and rationale behind the legal actions taken against Qureshi. The delay in his initial arrest for other charges, the absence of any investigation during this period, and the accelerated legal proceedings as the decision on his cipher case appeal approaches, all suggest potential political motives.
Furthermore, the decision to grant remand despite the passage of over a year raises concerns about the considerations of judicial discretion in this context.
