The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has forecast a possibility of sighting the new moon of Shaban 1447 AH on the evening of January 20, 2026.
In a press release, SUPARCO said the moon will be born at the point of conjunction at 12:52 am Pakistan Standard Time on January 19, 2026. Based on astronomical calculations, the likelihood of moon sighting improves on Tuesday evening, January 20. This date corresponds to the 30th of Rajab.
SUPARCO noted that on the evening of January 19, the moon’s age will be around 17 hours and 36 minutes. In Pakistan’s coastal regions, the gap between sunset and moonset will be approximately 33 minutes. However, due to unfavourable visibility conditions, the chances of sighting the moon with the naked eye on January 19 remain very low.
Given these factors, the first day of Shaban is likely to begin on January 21, 2026, subject to official confirmation.
The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will announce the final decision on the start of the Islamic month. This committee serves as the sole authorised body to confirm moon sightings based on verified testimonies from across the country.
A meeting of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee is expected on the evening of January 19. There will also be sessions of the zonal and district committees to collect and review evidence of moon sightings.
Meanwhile, officials recalled that the Ministry of Science and Technology has introduced a mobile application, Ruet, for moon sighting, aimed at supporting the process through modern technology. Additionally, authorities say digital tools have helped improve coordination and reporting in recent years.
Shaban is the eighth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The 15th night of the month marks Shab-e-Barat, also known as the Night of Forgiveness, a night of deep religious significance. On this occasion, many Muslims visit graves. They also offer prayers for the deceased and observe voluntary fasting.
