The upcoming Pakistan general elections scheduled for February 8 will see an unprecedented event in Balochistan’s political history: seven former chief ministers are set to contest.
The unprecedented, remarkable occurrence highlights the ongoing political dynamics and the significant roles these leaders continue to play in the region’s governance.
Among these notable figures is former chief minister Sardar Akhtar Mengal, who is running for National and Balochistan Assembly seats. Nawab Aslam Khan Raisani, another ex-chief minister, is contesting for a Balochistan Assembly seat under the JUI banner. Additionally, Dr Malik Baloch and Nawab Sanaullah Zehri, both associated with the People’s Party, are throwing their hats back into the political ring.
The electoral battle also includes Jam Kamal Khan, a former BAP chief minister, now contesting on a PML-N ticket. The incumbent Speaker of the Balochistan Assembly and former chief minister, Jan Mohammad Jamali, is also in the running.
Former caretaker chief minister Sardar Saleh Mohammad Bhotani is rounding out this list, vying for a seat from his traditional constituency. This lineup of experienced political figures sets the stage for a highly competitive and closely watched election in Balochistan.
