The district administration of Karachi has enacted Section 144 in the Karachi division for the duration of New Year’s Eve. As per the official notification from the Karachi commissioner, this restriction will be effective from Saturday evening until January 1, 2024.
The enforcement of Section 144 particularly targets the prohibition of aerial firing in the city, with stringent measures set to be taken against any violations.
The Karachi traffic police, led by DIG Iqbal Dara, have developed a comprehensive strategy to address the issue of drunk driving during the New Year celebrations. Special police teams have been formed to initiate a crackdown against drivers under the influence of alcohol. The police have been equipped with breathalyzers to identify and manage cases of alcoholism among drivers effectively.
The ban also comes in response to the increasing number of road accidents in Karachi attributed to drunk driving. Offenders will face legal consequences, including case registration and vehicle seizure.
Nationwide Solidarity with Oppressed Palestinians
In a broader context, Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar has announced a complete ban on all forms of New Year celebrations as a gesture of solidarity with the oppressed Palestinian people. In a special televised message, he encouraged the public to demonstrate solidarity with the people of Gaza and observe simplicity at the start of the New Year.
The call for solidarity follows the profound impact of recent events in Gaza and the West Bank on the Pakistani nation and the broader Muslim Ummah, particularly concerning the plight of innocent children and the ongoing genocide of Palestinians.
