Recently released footage by the Louisville Police Department reveals the circumstances surrounding the arrest of Scottie Scheffler, the world’s number one golfer, on May 17 outside the PGA Championship in Louisville, Kentucky.
Scheffler faced charges, including a felony, for allegedly injuring a police officer while navigating past the scene of a fatal accident. Notably, the arresting officer did not activate his body camera.
One week after the incident, the newly surfaced video captures Scheffler making a left turn into Valhalla Golf Club, with the officer approaching the vehicle, leading to claims of an overreaction during the arrest. The video from a camera across the street shows the officer running towards Scheffler’s car, attempting to reach the driver’s door before arresting him.
Newly released images challenge initial perceptions of the arrest. These images depict Scheffler turning slowly and stopping, after which a police officer approaches the driver’s side. In contrast, additional officers converge on the scene, leading to his subsequent arrest.
According to Jefferson County court records, Scottie Scheffler faces charges including a felony count of second-degree assault on a police officer, and misdemeanors for third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals.
However, the footage and images that have emerged suggest a potential misunderstanding. Scheffler’s attorney, Steve Romines, maintains that the golfer complied with the officer’s commands. Doubts persist due to the absence of body camera footage from the initial contact through the arrest.
Following his release from jail, Scheffler returned to compete at Valhalla Golf Club. He received applause from the crowd as he resumed play at 10 a.m. local time, birdieing the first hole.
