In an unexpected move, Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (often called MbS) met with Iran’s Foreign Minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian, in Jeddah.
The significant engagement came swiftly before Amirabdollahian entered the Saudi realm. This bilateral dialogue signifies a significant development since the two nations embarked on a reconciliation journey earlier this year, brokered by China.
Amirabdollahian, before this meeting, had discussions with the Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, and conveyed optimism about the evolving rapport between Iran and Saudi Arabia, mentioning that their relationship seemed “on the right track.”
Following his conversation with MbS, the Iranian Foreign Minister described the talks as “frank, beneficial, and productive.” Both leaders found mutual ground in promoting regional security and development. Visuals from the meeting depicted a pleasant ambience, with both MbS and Amirabdollahian sharing warm exchanges.
Context of the Rekindled Diplomatic Ties
The Middle East witnessed a fierce rivalry between Iran and Saudi Arabia, primarily from their quest for supremacy in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, and Bahrain. This competition was punctuated by sectarian conflicts, deeply affecting regional dynamics.
However, a major turning point arrived in March, with China mediating to restore diplomatic relations that had been severed by Saudi Arabia in 2016 following a contentious incident involving its embassy in Tehran. This reconciliation paved the way for Prince Faisal’s visit to Tehran and subsequent talks of a potential visit by Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to Saudi Arabia.
Several factors contributed to this diplomatic thaw. Under the guidance of its Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran aimed to alleviate the political and economic constraints imposed by the U.S. It identified improved Saudi relations as a pathway. Simultaneously, Saudi Arabia, perceiving a waning U.S. interest in shared regional objectives, sought to strengthen its ties with China, a country maintaining amicable relations with Iran.
In a related development, Prince Faisal held telephonic talks with U.S. Secretary General Antony Blinken, emphasizing enhanced cooperation to ensure peace and stability in the Middle East.
