Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti, Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh, passed away at the age of 84, the Saudi News Agency announced on Tuesday, September 23, 2025. The Islamic world mourns the loss of a key religious scholar.
King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman expressed their condolences on behalf of the royal family, Sheikh Abdulaziz’s family, and Muslims worldwide. They praised his lifelong service to Islam.
The funeral will take place at Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh after the Asr prayer on Tuesday. King Salman ordered prayers in absentia at the Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah. All mosques across the kingdom will hold prayers in his honour.

Sheikh Abdulaziz served as Grand Mufti since 1999, following his appointment by King Fahd after the death of Sheikh Abdul Aziz Ibn Baz. He led the Council of Senior Scholars, delivered Hajj sermons, and guided Muslims on matters of faith.
The Royal Court described his passing as a great loss. Sheikh Abdulaziz served Islam and Muslims well, leaving a lasting impact on Saudi society and the wider Muslim world.
