Saudi Arabia is set to launch its first alcohol store in Riyadh, targeting non-Muslim diplomats. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman leads this initiative, which is part of Vision 2030 to diversify the economy.
In Riyadh’s Diplomatic Quarter, the store mandates registration via a mobile app, foreign ministry clearance, and adherence to purchase limits. Access is limited to non-Muslims, respecting Islamic alcohol prohibitions.
The document, seen by Reuters, doesn’t specify access for non-diplomat expatriates, but sources expect an opening soon. Traditionally, Saudi Arabia’s strict laws punished alcohol consumption severely. Recently, reforms have replaced corporal punishment with jail time. Previously, alcohol was available only through diplomatic channels or illicitly.
This initiative aligns with recent social and economic reforms, symbolizing a shift towards a more open society.
