Sammi Deen Baloch, a leader of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC), was released on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, after being detained for several weeks under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance.
On March 24, Sammi Deen Baloch and five others were arrested for violating Section 144 during protests against rights violations. She remained in custody despite a magistrate’s release order the following day. Today, the Sindh Home Department cancelled her 30-day detention under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) and instructed Karachi Central Prison to release her unless she is linked to other cases.

Global voices, including UN experts, Amnesty International, and various civil society groups, rallied to support Sammi and fellow BYC activists like Dr. Mahrang Baloch. Her sister, Mehlab Deen Baloch, confirmed Sammi’s release on X, stating, “Sammi is free! I’m beyond grateful to Advocate Jibran Nasir, human rights defenders, and everyone who fought for justice.” Nasir credited public and media pressure as “instrumental” in securing her freedom.

Nasir hailed Sammi’s release as a “first step,” but he called for further action. “Withdraw the MPO against all BYC members; they have the right to peaceful protest. Free Mahrang Baloch and all detained activists immediately,” he urged. The struggle for rights in Balochistan led by the BYC is gaining momentum, and this victory has intensified calls for broader change.
