Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi has achieved a global milestone by successfully performing a complex robotic surgery on a 36-year-old woman with a large adrenal tumour.
According to Medical Superintendent Dr. Sandeep Bansal, the adrenal tumour measuring 18.2 x 13.5 cm is the largest of its kind ever removed using robotic techniques in a minimally invasive manner.
The procedure was led by Dr. Pawan Vasudeva, Head of Urology and Renal Transplant, alongside Dr. Niraj Kumar and Dr. Avishek Mandal. The anaesthesia team included Dr. Sushil, Dr. Bhavya, and Dr. Megha. The tumour’s size and dangerous attachment to the inferior vena cava, liver, and right kidney made the surgery highly challenging.

Using the Da Vinci robot’s 3D vision and precise robotic arms, the team completed the three-hour operation without complications, fully removing the tumour while protecting critical structures. Dr. Vasudeva explained that the robot’s precision surpasses traditional methods, enabling intricate surgeries. The patient recovered quickly and was discharged in three days.

Robotic surgery provides benefits like smaller incisions, less pain, and faster recovery compared to open surgery, which would have required a 20 cm incision and weeks of healing. Dr. Bansal highlighted that this milestone showcases Safdarjung Hospital’s expertise and commitment to free, cutting-edge healthcare.
