World number one Aryna Sabalenka won her second US Open title in New York. She defeated Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 7-6 (7/3) in a fast match lasting one hour and 34 minutes on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Sabalenka, 27, became the first woman since Serena Williams in 2014 to defend the US Open title. “It’s crazy. Those tough losses made this win worth it,” she said. She lost in the finals at both the Australian and French Opens earlier this year.
Sabalenka played strong tennis, winning five of six break points and her 19th straight tiebreak. Her aggressive style was clear throughout the match.
Amanda Anisimova, 24, made her second Grand Slam final in a row. She found the lighting tough and said nerves got to her. “I didn’t fight hard enough today,” Anisimova admitted. “The roof made it hard to see the ball when serving.”
