Russia has taken full control of Avdiivka, a Ukrainian town, signifying its largest territorial gain in nine months, following the retreat of Ukrainian forces, with reports indicating the presence of Ukrainian soldiers entrenched in a large, Soviet-era coke plant after intense combat.
As per Reuters, the fall of Avdiivka has been unparalleled since Bakhmut’s seizure in May 2023, coinciding with the second anniversary of the full-scale invasion ordered by President Vladimir Putin. The Russian defence ministry highlighted an advancement of 8.6km along the 1,000km frontline, leaving Avdiivka nearly deserted and devastated by the urban conflict.
Ukraine described its withdrawal as a tactical manoeuvre to evade complete encirclement after protracted combat, while Putin celebrated Avdiivka’s capture as a significant victory, lauding Russian forces. The capture of Avdiivka not only represents a territorial win but also serves as a morale booster for Putin ahead of his re-election campaign, aligning with Moscow’s aim to dominate the industrial Donbas region.
The situation is further complicated by Ukraine’s weapon shortages, worsened by delays in US military support due to congressional resistance. President Joe Biden has reiterated America’s support for Ukraine, pressing Congress for the expedited approval of a military aid package.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, at a global security conference, appealed for international help to address the weapon deficit. Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov emphasized the necessity for advanced air defence systems and long-range weaponry.
