On Monday, Russia declared it had successfully deflected a significant attack by Ukraine in the Donetsk region of southern Ukraine. However, Russian sources reported the fatalities of hundreds of pro-Kyiv soldiers. Whether this event signals the start of a predicted Ukrainian push to regain land lost in the Russian invasion of February 2022 is unclear.
The Russian defense ministry said that Ukraine commenced the attack with a mix of mechanized and tank battalions in the Donetsk region. Moscow had previously forecast that this area could be a Ukrainian entry point into Russian-held territory. However, the Russian claim could not be immediately confirmed, and no immediate response came from the Ukrainian side.
Ukraine’s Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov hinted at the incident on Twitter with a cryptic message using Depeche Mode lyrics, “Words are very unnecessary. They can only harm.”
The Russian defense ministry reported that their forces caused significant damage to Ukrainian troops during the clash, claiming to have killed 250 soldiers and destroyed multiple vehicles and tanks. However, these assertions have not been independently confirmed, and there has been no response from Ukraine’s defense ministry or military.
Russia further stated that their Chief of General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, was in the region during the attack. Ukraine has been anticipating a counteroffensive against Russia for months, aiming to challenge Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The outcome of this counteroffensive could determine future Western support for Ukraine. The recent conflict started when Putin deployed forces into Ukraine in February. The initial plan was for a quick operation, but setbacks forced Russian forces to regroup and pull back to eastern Ukraine. As a result, Russia now controls a significant portion of Ukrainian territory and has declared four regions as Russian territory.
Ukraine continues to fight back, seeking to push Russian forces out of its territory. The conflict has seen Russia accusing the West of exploiting its natural resources, while the West supports Ukraine but avoids confrontation with Russia. US President Joe Biden has warned that a NATO-Russia clash could escalate to World War Three.
