Russell responds to Norris 2026 rules criticism after George Russell’s Australian Grand Prix win, dismissing Lando Norris’ angry take on the new Formula One regulations as something he likely wouldn’t be saying if McLaren were on top.
Norris, the reigning world champion in the report’s framing, blasted the changes after qualifying in Melbourne, saying the 2026 cars “suck” and are the “worst” in history.
He pointed to the new power unit split 50% battery, arguing it drains too quickly and must be recharged through braking or lifting off the throttle, which he said: “just doesn’t work.”
Russell Responds to Norris 2026 Rules Complaints as “Sour Grapes” Talk Grows
Asked whether Norris’ comments amounted to “sour grapes,” Russell said: “If he was winning, I don’t think he’d be saying the same.”
Russell argued that drivers often criticise what hurts them in the moment. He referenced last season’s complaints about stiff cars and porpoising, noting that teams and drivers tend to focus on their own experience.
He also said performance swings are normal. Russell pointed out that last year McLaren outperformed Mercedes with the same engine, while this season Mercedes has started stronger despite multiple teams running the same power unit.
Russell added that the sport should give the new rules time before making final judgments. “Everyone’s very quick to criticise things, you need to give it a shot,” he said.
Norris started his campaign with a fifth-place finish, more than 51 seconds behind winner Russell, according to the report.
McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri crashed out on a reconnaissance lap before the grand prix began and did not take further part.

Norris said it could be “a long, tough season,” but added McLaren is in “a reasonable place to start from” and will keep pushing.
