Cristiano Ronaldo’s obscene gesture with Al Shabab fans after a 3-2 win has garnered widespread attention and sparked debate within Saudi Arabia. The league’s Disciplinary Committee is contemplating a two-match suspension for Ronaldo due to his behaviour.
Facing potential disciplinary action, the Portuguese star, now with Al Nassr, felt compelled to explain his side of the story to the authorities.
In remarks to ‘Al-Riyadiya,’ a Saudi media outlet, Ronaldo articulated his respect for all teams and justified his celebratory gesture as an expression of triumph and resilience, arguing that such displays are not uncommon in European soccer.
Ronaldo’s suspension will be resolved today, Wednesday, by the Saudi League’s Disciplinary and Ethics Committee, which has conducted a thorough inquiry into the incident.
Despite Ronaldo’s justification, the committee appears inclined towards enforcing a two-game suspension, labelling his actions as “inappropriate.”
The league’s rules grant the Disciplinary Committee the power to address incidents like SRonaldo’s, especially if captured by official league broadcasters. Furthermore, complaints accompanied by video evidence are deemed valid under Article 117 of the Disciplinary Code.
Should the suspension be confirmed, Ronaldo will be sidelined for matches against Al Hazem and Al Raed at Al Nassr Stadium. Nonetheless, he remains eligible for the Asian Champions League game against Al-Ain and would return for a key fixture against Al Ahli.
This episode serves as a poignant reminder for players transferring from Europe to the Saudi Pro League of the significant cultural differences they may encounter, highlighting the importance of understanding local sensitivities.
