China’s Xiaomeisha Sea World has attracted public attention by displaying a life-sized robotic whale shark, not a real one. The aquarium recently reopened and charges a steep entry fee of 230 yuan (Rs8,845), has sparked perplexity and outrage among visitors.
The robotic whale shark, featured in viral social media videos, simulates movement in the aquarium’s waters in Shenzhen, Guangdong province. However, the revelation that the whale shark is artificial has disappointed some visitors, who have voiced their dissatisfaction and sought refunds through Dazhong Dianping, the service platform associated with the aquarium operated by Meituan, according to SCMP.
A visitor expressed dismay, stating, “I cannot believe the whale shark is fake. It’s outrageous to charge over 200 yuan for a ticket.” Another threatened to report the facility and seek its closure upon discovering the deception.
Conversely, some visitors appreciated the innovative approach. A self-described cyberpunk enthusiast praised the aquarium on Xiaohongshu: “It’s a wonderful alternative to showcase large marine creatures without imprisoning them in a tank. The aquarium should use this to educate the public about animal protection rather than hide the whale shark’s true nature.”
It's a robotic whale shark? Visitors to #Shenzhen’s #XiaomeishaOceanWorld are disappointed after discovering the much-anticipated #whaleshark is actually a robotic replica during its trial operation in October.
