Khalusha, a 33-year-old labelled as a “vampire” and “psychopathic serial killer,” has admitted to the brutal murders of 42 women, including his wife. He executed these murders between 2022 and his recent arrest, mutilating and disposing of the body parts in sacks at a Nairobi scrapyard amid Kenya’s escalating gender-based violence.
Upon searching his residence, police discovered a machete, industrial rubber gloves, Sellotape rolls, and nylon sacks, linking him to the gruesome acts. Residents had been using an abandoned quarry in Nairobi’s Mukuru slums as a dumpsite, where dismembered bodies of nine women were initially found, marking the start of the horrific discovery.
After his arrest following the quarry discovery, further investigations at Khalusha’s home revealed multiple mobile phones and identity cards of the victims, underscoring the deliberate nature of his killings. Khalusha, now referred to as the “Kenyan Ted Bundy,” lured his victims from his nearby dilapidated dwelling to their deaths.
Among the identified victims was Josephine Owino, a 26-year-old hair braider. Her disappearance led her sister to the quarry, where search efforts revealed sacks with mutilated remains. Dr. Johansen Oduor, a government pathologist, reported that most sacks contained severed limbs and torsos, with one body found intact and evidence of strangulation on another.
The proximity of the dumping ground to a police station has sparked criticism of the Kenyan police for apparent inaction over multiple missing women reports, raising concerns about police efficiency.
As Khalusha faces court proceedings, his lawyer alleges police mistreatment and coerced confessions, demanding medical care for Khalusha. The court has extended Khalusha’s detention, granting investigators additional time to consolidate their case amid national protests against economic and political instability.
