Renowned journalist Khaled Ahmed passed away at his residence in Zaman Park on Sunday at the age of 81 due to cardiac arrest.
Born in 1943 in Jalandhar, Khaled Ahmed had a distinguished career in journalism spanning over four decades. Following an initial stint as a bureaucrat in the foreign service, he contributed to prominent publications, including The Pakistan Times, The Nation, The Frontier Post, The Friday Times, and Daily Times. He last served as a consulting editor at Newsweek Pakistan.
Khaled Ahmed was an alumnus of Government College Lahore, where he earned his MA (Honours) during the 1965 war, also achieving recognition on the roll of honour. He furthered his education with a German diploma from Punjab University and a Russian (interpretation) diploma from Moscow State University in 1970.
His publications, including “Pakistan: The State in Crisis” and “Sectarian War: Sunni-Shia Conflict in Pakistan,” highlighted his deep insights into Pakistan’s socio-political issues.
Colleagues remember him fondly. Najam Sethi reminisced about their long-standing friendship and collaboration, praising Khaled’s profound knowledge and humility. Talat Hussain lauded him as an exceptional journalist with courageous, insightful perspectives on Pakistan’s sociopolitical landscape.
In his tribute, Syed Javed Nazir described Khaled as a cultured and intellectual figure whose international experiences enriched his professional identity.
Funeral prayers for Khaled Ahmed will be held at the Zaman Park ground at 3 pm today. His son survives him.
