Guitarist and music pioneer Adnan Afaq, known for his battle with stage IV stomach cancer, passed away at 12:30 PM today.
Armaan Raheem from the Arts Council Pakistan (ACP) verified the news, revealing that Afaq was hospitalized due to complications from his illness. His passing marks a significant loss in the music industry, but his enduring legacy continues through his music and influence on others.
Adnan Afaq, affectionately known as Adnan Vai, was more than a musician. He was a mentor and key figure in Pakistan’s music industry. As head of the music department at the Arts Council Pakistan, he was instrumental in nurturing emerging talent. The Council recognized his contributions during the first Alumni Festival.
Despite the challenges of his illness, Afaq remained involved and conscious, albeit reliant on drip-fed nutrition. His career was marked by significant contributions to live performances and recordings. From his beginnings with bands like Powerhouse to acclaim with projects like Arsh and Circle, his versatility and artistry were profound.
Afaq’s dedication to music education forms a significant part of his legacy. With training in jazz and modern fusion from the United Kingdom, he influenced music education in Pakistan. As head of the Arts Council’s music department since 2018, he advanced this passion, fostering a fusion of Eastern and Western musical traditions.
