Vladimir Shklyarov, a distinguished Russian ballet dancer, has tragically passed away at 39 after falling from a building.
Shklyarov, associated with the Mariinsky Theatre for over two decades, succumbed to injuries from a fall, which took place while he was under the influence of painkillers before a scheduled spinal surgery on November 18. The Russian news agency RIA Novosti cites preliminary investigations labelling the incident as accidental, prompting a federal investigation.
Mariinsky Theater, where Shklyarov had been a prominent figure, confirmed his death, expressing profound loss for the theatre and the global ballet community. “Vladimir Shklyarov’s immense talent and contributions have left an indelible mark on the ballet world. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to his family, friends, and admirers,” the theater stated.
Born in 1985 in St. Petersburg, Shklyarov’s illustrious career began at the Mariinsky Theatre in 2003, following his graduation from the Academy of Russian Ballet. He ascended to principal dancer by 2011, captivating audiences worldwide with performances in esteemed productions such as “Giselle” and “Romeo and Juliet.”

His remarkable talent also led him to stages like the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, and The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. The American Ballet Theater (ABT) recently paid homage to his memorable guest performances.
Throughout his career, Shklyarov garnered numerous accolades, including the Léonide Massine International Prize and the Honoured Artist of Russia title in 2020. He leaves behind his wife, Maria, also a dancer at the Mariinsky Theatre, and their two children.
