The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) anticipates the current heatwave across the country to ease this week as pre-monsoon rains begin on June 25 (Sunday).
The weather forecasting agency announced that regions in the upper and central parts of the country would likely experience dust thunderstorms with intermittent periods of rain from June 25 to 30.
In a statement, the PMD said, “Moist currents are making their way into the upper and central parts of the country from the Arabian Sea, and a westerly wave is likely to penetrate the upper regions of the country on June 25.”
Pre-Monsoon Rains
The PMD predicts that this weather system will result in wind thundershowers and potential heavy falls in several areas, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, and other regions from the night of June 24 to 30, with occasional pauses.
Furthermore, parts of Barkhan, Loralai, Sibbi, Naseerabad, Kalat, Khuzdar, and others are expected to witness wind thundershowers and isolated heavy falls from June 26 to 29, while areas like Sukkur, Jacobabad, and Larkana can anticipate rainfall on June 27/28.
The PMD warns that intense rainfall may lead to urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Gujranwala, and Lahore on June 26 and 27 and could instigate landslides in Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, and hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
“Heavy rain may trigger flash floods in hill torrents of D G Khan and neighboring regions of north-east Balochistan on June 27,” it added.
