Real Madrid triumphed over Chelsea on Tuesday, guaranteeing their place in the Champions League semi-finals with a 4-0 aggregate victory.
Chelsea began the match assertively, showcasing an offensive mindset. However, they failed to capitalize on two significant opportunities in the first half, ultimately proving costly.
Real Madrid took advantage of Chelsea’s inefficiency in the 58th minute when Rodrygo found the net, later scoring a second goal to confirm their victory.
Chelsea’s disappointing season ended with this defeat, as they lost all four matches since Frank Lampard resumed his role as interim manager earlier in the month.
Real Madrid’s manager, Carlo Ancelotti, maintained the same lineup that won the first leg 2-0. In contrast, Lampard made several changes, incorporating Reece James, Mateo Kovacic, and N’Golo Kante into his starting eleven. Chelsea started strong but failed to capitalize on an early chance when Kante missed from close range.
Real Madrid threatened on the counter and nearly scored when Rodrygo struck the post. Luka Modric and Vinicius Junior also had scoring opportunities but couldn’t find the target.
Just before halftime, Chelsea had another chance to go ahead when Reece James crossed the ball to Marc Cucurella, but Thibaut Courtois made a crucial save.
Kante missed another opportunity in the second half as Eder Militao blocked his shot. Real Madrid went ahead in the 58th minute with Rodrygo’s close-range goal and never looked back.
Despite making several offensive substitutions, Lampard couldn’t prevent Real Madrid from securing the victory with Rodrygo’s second goal in the 80th minute.
Real Madrid is expected to face Manchester City in the semi-finals, while Chelsea’s disastrous season has drawn to a close. With over £500 million spent in the first year under new ownership, Chelsea has been eliminated from both domestic cups, sits 11th in the Premier League, and has dwindling prospects for European qualification next season.
