Four alleged dacoits involved in the killing of a trader were killed during a police encounter in the Saddar Beroni area of Rawalpindi on Saturday, according to police officials.

Police said the suspects belonged to an inter-district gang involved in dacoity and contract killings. Earlier, the group had snatched a car at gunpoint from a citizen and fled. Police teams launched an immediate pursuit after receiving the alert.

When officers attempted to intercept the suspects at a checkpoint in Saddar Beroni, the accused opened fire on the police party. This triggered a gunfight. During the exchange, four suspects were killed after being hit by bullets fired by their own accomplices, police said.

Authorities identified the deceased as Younus, Hameed, Aasim Khan, and Haider. Two other members of the gang managed to escape, prompting police to begin a search operation across multiple locations.

Police officials said the suspects killed were wanted in several cases involving car snatching, armed robbery, and murder. Investigators also linked the same gang to the killing of a local petrol pump owner last month in Saddar Beroni.

The victim, Sardar Irshad, was shot dead while returning home with his daughters after picking them up from school. CCTV footage of the incident later circulated on social media and helped investigators trace the suspects.

During the operation, police recovered the snatched car, weapons, ammunition, cash amounting to Rs50,000, an identity card, and other valuables. Officers also recovered another vehicle that the gang had earlier stolen at gunpoint from Islamabad.

Senior police officers arrived at the scene shortly after the encounter. Police teams are conducting raids to arrest the fleeing suspects and dismantle the remaining network.

A case has been registered under murder, attempted murder, and other relevant sections of the law. Syed Khalid Hamdani, City Police Officer Rawalpindi, said criminals who threaten lives and property will face strict action, adding that operations against organised crime will continue without discrimination.
