Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from all formats of international cricket after the third test against Australia ended in a draw in Brisbane on Wednesday.
At the Gabba, the 38-year-old stated, “This will be my last day as an Indian cricketer at the international level.”
Ashwin, a right-arm off-spinner, retires with 537 wickets from 106 tests, ranking second among Indian bowlers behind Anil Kumble’s 619.
Although not selected for the series opener in Perth, Ashwin returned for the day-night second test in Adelaide, where he claimed one wicket. This appearance in Adelaide turned out to be his final test, as he did not play in Brisbane.
In his farewell remarks, Ashwin expressed, “I still feel there’s a bit of punch left in me as a cricketer, but I plan to showcase that at the club level.”
He reminisced, “I had a lot of fun and created many memories with Rohit [Sharma] and several other teammates,” with the India captain at his side.
Over his career, Ashwin also participated in 116 ODIs and 65 T20 Internationals, amassing 765 wickets across all formats. Known as a formidable player on India’s turning pitches, he also made his mark as a competent test all-rounder, scoring six centuries in the format.
