Federal safety regulators have announced an urgent recall affecting more than 52,000 Ram heavy-duty trucks in the United States after identifying a serious software defect that can disable critical safety systems.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the issue involves a malfunction in the vehicle’s safety control module. The fault can cause airbags and traction control to shut down without any warning while the truck is in motion.
The recall covers four 2025 Ram Heavy Duty models: 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500. These trucks ranked among the best-selling vehicles in the country last year, highlighting the scale of the safety concern.

Regulators warned that if the safety computer fails during driving, the traction control may stop working. This increases the risk of skidding and significantly raises the chance of a crash or serious injury.
The vehicles are manufactured by Stellantis, which confirmed this marks its 52nd recall of the year. In 2025 alone, the automaker has recalled approximately 2.8 million vehicles across multiple brands.
Stellantis has already notified dealerships and plans to contact affected owners by email by mid-January. The company will provide the required software fix at no cost.
Owners of impacted Ram Heavy Duty trucks are advised to monitor dashboard warning lights and wait for official recall instructions. Regulators emphasise that drivers should arrange the repair as soon as they receive notification to ensure continued vehicle safety.
