Rahul Gandhi, a prominent leader of the Indian opposition Congress party, expressed his discontent with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s management of India-China relations, asserting that China is “infringing on our territory.” He also criticized Modi’s contribution to religious division within the country.
During a speech, Gandhi pointed out the issue of China occupying Indian territory and contested Modi’s apparent disregard. India’s embassy in Washington has yet to respond to these comments. This criticism comes just weeks before Modi’s planned trip to the US.
The relationship between China and India has been tense since their border conflict in the 1960s over the disputed Himalayan frontier. The tension escalated in 2020 with deadly skirmishes at the border. China recently fueled the discord further by renaming 11 places in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, a region China refers to as southern Tibet and asserts sovereignty over. India, however, dismisses these claims.
Gandhi also attributed India’s religious polarization to Modi and his Hindu nationalist party, arguing they are exclusive and contribute to societal division. Despite these accusations, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rejects these claims and insists their policies are intended to benefit all Indians.
Furthermore, Gandhi accused the BJP of dominating institutions and media. Since Modi’s ascension to power in 2014, India’s position on the World Press Freedom Index has declined significantly. Despite this, the BJP maintains it has not compromised institutions and that its governance follows the rule of law.
