Rafiq Habib, a well-known Pakistani business tycoon and philanthropist, passed away in Dubai at the age of 88. He was the former chairman of the House of Habib. Habib made a big impact on the country’s economy and education.
Habib University, where he was the founding chancellor, shared the news on Instagram and Facebook, stating, “With deep sorrow, Habib University mourns the passing of its founding chancellor.”
Born in 1937, Rafiq Habib played a key role in growing the House of Habib, an important part of Pakistan’s financial and industrial world. He loved education and founded Habib University in Karachi to promote new and inclusive learning. His vision made the university a center for excellent academics and community service.
Wasif Rizvi, President of Habib University, praised Habib’s work. “Rafiq Sahib dreamed of a world-class university in Karachi,” Rizvi said. “He saw it as a way to help society through education. This showed the Habib family’s long commitment to the public good.”
Rizvi shared a personal story about working with Habib. “At first, it felt like just the two of us—Rafiq as the vision’s guide, and me as its first caretaker,” he said. “His calm support gave me strength and inspired every step.”
Habib cared deeply about creating chances for young people. “The thousands of students who come through Habib University are his true legacy,” Rizvi added. “His kindness was about love for knowledge and service, not fame.”
