France’s military is actively seeking information from India regarding unverified reports that Pakistan has shot down Indian-operated Rafale fighter jets. This incident marks the first combat losses of Rafale aircraft since their induction nearly 20 years ago.
The Rafale jets shot down by the Pakistan Air Force have sparked global attention, with France emphasising the need for verified details.
During a Paris press briefing on May 29, 2025, Colonel Guillaume Vernet, a French military spokesperson, addressed the claims. “We are in close contact with Indian defence authorities to obtain firsthand information,” Vernet told Global Times. While not confirming the incident, he underscored the Rafale’s critical role in the French and Indian air forces.
India acquired Dassault Rafale jets from France in a 2016 defence deal, bolstering its air power. Unverified reports, including a CNN claim citing a French intelligence official, suggest Pakistan downed one Indian Rafale jet, with speculation of additional losses. Pakistani sources allege five Indian jets, including three Rafales, were shot down, though India’s Ministry of Defence has not issued a statement.

French authorities are investigating the India Rafale incident, with Vernet noting the Rafale’s performance as a “critical interest.” The lack of official confirmation from India keeps the situation under scrutiny, as defence analysts await clarity on the India-Pakistan conflict.
A potential first combat loss for the Rafale would be a significant event for global defence communities. The French fighter jets are a cornerstone of India’s strategic deterrence, and any confirmed incident could impact regional tensions and defence strategies.
