Ahead of the Russian presidential elections scheduled for March 15-17, President Vladimir Putin has issued a stark warning about Russia’s nuclear readiness.
In a Wednesday interview reported by NBC News, Putin underscored Russia’s preparedness for nuclear conflict if necessitated, yet he suggested that a move towards nuclear war is not inevitable.
Putin elaborated on Russia’s sophisticated nuclear arsenal, implying that U.S. President Joe Biden is well aware of the catastrophic potential of any escalation. His remarks come as he is poised to secure a fifth term in office, extending his leadership for another six years.
This recent invocation of nuclear rhetoric by Putin marks the second instance within a week, heightening concerns among experts about escalating tensions linked to the electoral process. Putin also discussed the implications of Western involvement in the Ukraine conflict and cautioned against the potential dangers of nuclear warfare.
He considered the deployment of American infantry in Russia or Ukraine as an act of invasion. Still, he acknowledged that Biden’s diplomatic expertise and the counsel of Washington’s experts could serve as a moderating force.
