Punjab police have detained an elderly man after a video showing him using offensive language against Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and other government officials circulated widely on social media.
The video recording, made during Thursday’s heavy rainfall in Lahore, captured the man expressing frustration about the city’s inadequate drainage system while directing abusive remarks at provincial leadership.
Following his arrest, the suspect issued a public apology, stating: “I regret my actions and apologise to the Government of Pakistan.” Authorities are currently investigating whether the video was spontaneously recorded or part of a coordinated effort to malign government officials.

The controversial video emerged during severe weather conditions that paralysed Lahore. Rainfall beginning at 5:00 AM and continuing until 11:30 AM flooded low-lying areas across the city. Nishtar Town recorded the highest precipitation at 182mm, with water entering homes in Dharampura, Shah Jamal, Choburji, and surrounding neighbourhoods.
Tragically, a young boy died by electrocution while bathing in rainwater accumulated at Lari Adda. Numerous vehicles remained stranded in flooded underpasses and major thoroughfares as drainage systems failed to handle the deluge.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department forecasts continued monsoon rains until July 13. According to National Disaster Management Authority figures released Saturday, the nationwide death toll from monsoon-related incidents has reached 104. These fatalities result from flooding, electrocutions, and structural collapses across affected regions.
The provincial government has faced increasing criticism regarding urban infrastructure preparedness as videos of citizens wading through waist-deep water continue to circulate online. Officials assert that they are actively working to enhance drainage systems and emergency response measures.
