Eighteen students were injured as Islami Jamiat-e- Tulba (IJT) attacked Pashtun cultural event the University of the Punjab on Tuesday.
Pashtun students were celebrating their cultural day outside the Faisal Auditorium at the campus IJT student group arrived and began chanting slogans against them.
Soon both the groups were raising slogans against each other, which led to an all-out brawl. The students were seen attacking each other with batons and by pelting bricks.
However, the concerned authorities called in the police who resorted peace through aerial firing and tear-gassing.
In all, 18 students were injured and a stall at the cultural show also caught fire from a tear gas shell.
Later, Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said that 18 out of 22 arrested students were involved in brawl belonged to the Islami Jamiat-e- Tulba (IJT) , who was reportedly the responsible for the violence.
However, the IJT dismissed his colaim and said that first its camp came under attack by the rival group.
Vice Chancellor Punjab University Zafar Moeen Nasir, while talking to local news channel ‘GEO News’ said that action would be taken against those responsible. “We have told the police to clean up the entire system and arrest people who are illegal occupants or those causing provocation.”
The VC said a committee had been formed to probe this matter and action would be taken by the university.
Chief Minister Punjab Shehbaz Sharif took notice of the incident and ordered for an enquiry report. (PhotoNews /GEO News)
