The Punjab government has issued a new directive requiring all government and private schools in the province to delay their opening until 8:45 AM or later. The measure is a direct response to the dangerously high levels of smog, particularly in Lahore and surrounding areas.
Director General of the Environment Protection Department, Imran Hamid Shaikh, announced that any school violating the order will face a substantial fine ranging from Rs. 500,000 to Rs. 1,000,000.
Officials cited a sharp decline in air quality as the reason for the policy change. Data shows that Lahore’s Air Quality Index (AQI) reading surged from 300 to 400 between October 19 and 30, indicating a significant increase in hazardous particulate matter.

On Sunday, Lahore ranked as the world’s second most polluted city, with an AQI of 346. Only New Delhi, with an AQI of 467, recorded worse air quality.
The government’s decision aligns with advice from health experts, who are urging the public to take precautions. Residents, especially children and the elderly, are advised to wear protective masks outdoors and avoid unnecessary travel during peak smog hours, typically in the early morning.
This proactive measure aims to minimize children’s exposure to toxic air during their commute to school, safeguarding their health during a period of severe environmental distress.
