The Punjab traffic police in Lahore issued an unprecedented 111,000 driving licenses in just one day on Wednesday.
The event appears to set a world record in the wake of the Punjab Traffic Police’s stringent enforcement against unlicensed drivers. This action was primarily motivated by a distressing accident caused by an underage driver in Lahore. The significant measures taken by the police were most notably observed in the DHA Area of Lahore.
The Punjab police spokesperson confirmed that this record number of licenses included learning, national, and international categories. A detailed breakdown revealed that the highest number of licenses, 27,000, was issued in Lahore, followed by Faisalabad, Gujranwala, and Rawalpindi.
In a related development, the Punjab government recently increased the driving license fee from Rs60 to Rs1,000, a decision made during the 33rd meeting of the provincial cabinet. Despite this hike, the Lahore Traffic Police announced that applications could still be submitted under the old fee structure until December 31.
These actions by the Punjab police and the provincial government reflect a concerted effort to improve road safety and ensure compliance with traffic regulations. By issuing many licenses and adjusting fee structures, authorities aim to regulate driving practices more effectively and prevent accidents, especially those caused by unlicensed and underage drivers.
