On Monday, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif authorized the distribution of one-kilowatt solar kits to 50,000 households across Punjab. This decision was made during a key session focused on the “Light without Electricity Bill, Chief Minister’s Roshan Punjab Programme” held in Lahore, where she was updated on the technical aspects of domestic solar implementations.
CM Maryam announced that this initiative is designed to alleviate the burden of high electricity costs for low-income families. She ordered the immediate commencement of a pilot project to assess the effectiveness of the solar systems.
During the initiative’s first phase, households consuming up to 100 units of electricity per month will qualify for the program. She explained that each eligible household will receive two solar panels, a battery, an inverter, and necessary wiring.
The chief minister was informed that the 1 KW solar can power fans, lights, and small motors and offers up to 16 hours of operational capacity with a fully charged lithium-ion battery.
She instructed that only the latest technology should be used for the solar systems and stressed the importance of procuring high-quality solar plates, inverters, batteries, and other components. CM Maryam also indicated plans to expand the program to include more households over time.
