The 18th Punjab Assembly’s newly elected members are set to be sworn in tomorrow, marking the first session of this provincial legislature since the February 8 elections. This event, scheduled for 10 a.m. on Friday, follows Punjab Governor Baligh Ur Rehman’s official notification.
Speaker Sibtain Khan is tasked with administering the oath to the incoming members. This development arrived shortly after the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) held a parliamentary gathering at Jati Umra, Lahore, with 218 attendees, including independent members and PML-N MPAs.
The meeting saw the participation of 137 PML-N victors, 58 women appointed to specific seats, and over 22 independents who sided with PML-N post-elections. A total of 186 members is needed for government formation.
Maryam Nawaz, a notable figure among the newcomers, is set to enter the provincial legislature as an elected representative. Nominated for the chief minister’s role, her entry follows victories in both national and provincial assembly seats. Maryam’s commitment to exemplary governance was voiced during a recent media interaction, emphasizing a transformative agenda for Punjab.
Her potential election as chief minister would be historic, marking her as the first woman to hold the position in Pakistan’s history. Maryam focuses on overcoming significant health, education, and local governance challenges, stressing the importance of comprehensive development across Punjab’s constituencies.
