Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced Punjab’s election campaign.
PTI’s Secretary General Asad Umar announced on Twitter that Imran Khan will initiate the party’s election campaign for Punjab elections tomorrow, despite the uncertain status of the polls.
“Tehreek-e-Insaf will formally start the election campaign in all constituencies of Punjab from tomorrow, God willing. Ready or not, we are ready,” Umar tweeted.
Earlier this week, the PTI finalized its list of 297 candidates for the upcoming elections after PTI Chairman Imran Khan personally interviewed all party candidates to ensure merit-based allocation of party credentials.
The ex-prime minister, removed by a vote of no confidence in April of the previous year, held one-on-one interviews with all candidates between April 6 and April 18 to select nominees.
However, the allocation of tickets faced criticism within the party, as many prominent leaders were left out. In response, Khan reportedly plans to include party vice chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Umar on the review committee.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the election, the PTI announced the start of its campaign. However, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) awaits election funding from the federal government.
The Supreme Court previously ordered the ECP to hold Punjab elections on May 14, directing the federal government to disburse Rs21 billion to the ECP by April 10 and provide election security. Nevertheless, the government has not issued funds for the elections, and the defense ministry has refused to provide security due to the security situation.
