Punjab Governor Baligh-ur-Rehman ousted Parvez Elahi in a late-night notification as the province’s chief minister, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Mulsim League-Quaid (PML-Q) said they will move the case to court.
In the notification, Rehman stated that as he believes Elahi failed to obtain the Punjab Assembly’s trust, he is de-notifying him as the province chief minister and dissolving the provincial cabinet.
Late at night, PML-Q and PTI convened an emergency consultation at Elahi’s residence to discuss their next steps.
After the meeting, Speaker of the Punjab Assembly Sibtain Khan told reporters that the chief minister will go the court first thing in the morning and that the governor had taken an “illegal” action.”
PTI Senior Vice President Fawad Chaudhry stated that the governor lacked the authority to remove the chief minister.
According to the PTI leader, the Pakistani Constitution does not recognize the governor’s announcement. He noted that the provincial legislature is the only entity with authority to remove the premier.
He stated, “The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has resurrected the 58-2B.”
