The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) oppose the Sindh government’s decision to delay the local body election and termed it “Unacceptable.”
Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon announced that Karachi, Hyderabad, and Dadu’s January 15 local government elections have been postponed due to MQM-P reservations.
JI Karachi president Hafiz Naeem-Ur-Rehman called the postponement an “ambush” on Karachi and Hyderabad by the PPP and MQM-P.
The JI leader urged party members to stay strong as the party’s strategy will be announced this morning. “The Sindh government’s decision is inexcusable.”
Rehman said: “We’ll protest at the court and Election Commission of Pakistan. The MQM-P and PPP cannot escape.”
He asked party workers to stay in touch with the public as he announced the party’s next strategy at 10 am today.
The JI leader said the party would consider all options to gain public support.
“LG election postponement is a backstab and overnight ambush. As usual, the MQM-P and PPP wrong the people.”
Rehman called the two parties “robbers” for depriving youth of education and other civic amenities. He said the parties “pound to devour even a single ray of hope whenever it is created.”
He added that postponing the elections avoids defeat because they cannot afford public elections.
The PTI also opposes the provincial government’s decision, saying it will challenge the delay in court and pursue all democratic means.
PTI Sindh President Ali Zaidi said the provincial government did it out of fear of defeat.
He said the PTI will call for protest on Saturday after consultations.
The Sindh Assembly’s Leader of the Opposition, Haleem Adil Sheikh, said the MQM-P had pressured the PPP’s “subservient team.” He said MQM and PPP are the same.
Sheikh called Asif Ali Zardari “Sindh’s biggest ailment, and money-worshipper fled Karachi after he had to lick the dust in Punjab.” He urged Zardari to resign after moral and political defeat.
Karachi residents have identified Muhajir and Sindhi as “mercenaries and killers,” according to the PTI leader. Sheikh said the provincial government delayed the polls because the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) feared losing Karachi and Hyderabad.
