Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) expelled five National Assembly members for disregarding party directives. These lawmakers supported the 26th Constitutional Amendment. PTI regarded this as a clear breach of their oath, fidelity, and discipline.
On July 12, 2025, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan issued expulsion notices to several Members of the National Assembly (MNAs). The MNAs affected by this decision are Aurangzeb Khan Khichi, Zahoor Qureshi, Usman Ali, Mubarak Zeb, and Muhammad Ilyas Chaudhry. Each of them won their seats on PTI tickets and had committed to adhering to the party’s stances.
On September 2, 2024, PTI’s parliamentary team convened and unanimously agreed to oppose the amendment. They communicated these instructions to the National Assembly Speaker on September 5. However, on October 21, 2024, five MNAs broke ranks and supported the bill. Their votes contributed to its passage, which secured 225 approvals, one more than the required 224.

On November 5, 2024, PTI issued show-cause notices requesting explanations for potential disqualification under Articles 62 and 63. A hearing panel was established, but no Member of the National Assembly (MNA) responded or participated.

PTI claimed that the MNAs defected by joining the treasury benches during meetings. This violates constitutional rules. The notices stated: “You have violated your commitment, oath, and loyalty. You have joined another party through your actions. We expel you now.”
PTI requested the Election Commission of Pakistan to disqualify them under Article 63A. The amendment altered the judicial framework by updating the appointment processes, the Chief Justice’s tenure, and the composition of the Judicial Commission.
