The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Core Committee recently issued a stern statement urging President Dr Arif Alvi to fulfil his constitutional duties by announcing the date for the forthcoming general elections without further delays. The committee warned that any postponement would signify a breach of the constitution and an infringement of the fundamental democratic rights of the populace. This demand comes amidst the turbulent and uncertain environment engulfing the country since the alleged “regime change conspiracy” in April 2022.
Contrary to the perception of President Alvi leaning towards PTI during his tenure, PTI Secretary Information Raoof Hasan clarified that upon assuming the role of president, Alvi severed ties with the party. He stressed that the committee’s intention was merely to remind the president of his duties rather than making an unusual request. Hasan highlighted the constitution’s provision granting the president the authority to schedule general elections within 90 days of the National Assembly’s early dissolution, urging President Alvi to uphold the constitution’s supremacy promptly.
Pakistan Facing Complex Challenges Amidst Constitutional Crisis
The PTI Core Committee emphasized that Pakistan is currently navigating through a crucial period characterized by multifaceted challenges at various levels, including constitutional, political, economic, and social spheres. The committee attributed the present chaos and instability in governmental structures to the undemocratic shifts of power that occurred in April 2022, asserting that this has incited unprecedented distress and insecurity concerning national unity, development, and the fundamental rights of the citizens.
The resolution underscored the escalating disillusionment each day, recalling the dissolution of assemblies in Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa early in 2023 and criticizing the PDM government for not conducting elections within the constitutionally mandated 90 days. The committee members noted that the government’s defiance of the Supreme Court’s decision on April 4, 2023, fostered constitutional violations and induced widespread dismay among the populace. Conclusively, they reiterated the urgency of establishing a democratic government to address Pakistan’s multifaceted crises adequately.
