Mehr Muhammad Waseem, a candidate from the opposition party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), announced his withdrawal from the electoral race in Lahore’s NA-119 constituency in support of Maryam Nawaz, the Senior Vice President of PML-N.
The development has taken place amidst a backdrop of heightened election campaigns. Major political parties, notably the PML-N and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), are actively vying for power. Their campaigns, replete with compelling manifestos and promises, are gaining traction nationwide as the February 8 election date approaches.
Waseem’s decision to support Maryam Nawaz was formalized during a meeting where he also announced his and his followers’ allegiance to the PML-N. This meeting was a mere formality and a gathering of influential PML-N leaders. Prominent figures like Senator Pervaiz Rasheed, Marriyum Aurangzeb, and others were present, marking the event’s significance.
During the meeting, Maryam Nawaz emphasized the PML-N’s vision for Pakistan’s progress and prosperity. She criticized the previous government’s performance from 2018 to 2022, highlighting the country’s challenges. Maryam’s narrative underscored a distinction between politicians who genuinely serve the public and those who engage in political vendettas. She lauded Nawaz, Shehbaz, and PML-N workers for their resilience and triumph over difficult times.
In her campaign’s formal launch, Maryam addressed the PML-N’s election campaigners in the NA-119 constituency. Her speech was a commitment to the welfare of each family in her constituency, reinforcing her dedication to her voters. She also announced plans to meet with voters in Lahore’s NA-119 on the 25th.
Maryam confidently predicted a dominant performance by the PML-N in the upcoming polls, symbolically referring to the party as the “lion.” This prediction comes when the party’s morale is boosted by the return of the PML-N supremo from a nearly four-year exile. Despite the challenges faced during the 16-month tenure of the coalition government led by Shehbaz, the party remains hopeful.
In preparation for the elections, the PML-N has strategically positioned itself by fielding 208 candidates for the 266 National Assembly general seats. Moreover, the party has issued 671 tickets out of the 859 seats for the broader legislative landscape encompassing five legislatures. This extensive representation demonstrates the party’s commitment to a strong showing in the upcoming elections.
