The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has launched a key initiative to help overseas Pakistanis protect their mobile SIM cards from deactivation during extended stays abroad. The move aims to ensure uninterrupted telecom services and stronger consumer protection.
In a statement shared on social media, the PTA said the initiative allows members of the Pakistani diaspora to retain ownership of their SIM cards while living or travelling overseas. Subscribers can activate this facility for a defined period by informing their respective cellular operators and paying the applicable charges.
The authority said the measure will help overseas Pakistanis stay connected with family and services in Pakistan without the risk of SIM blockage due to inactivity. It also supports continuity in access to banking alerts, digital services, and official communications linked to mobile numbers.
The PTA advised prepaid customers to ensure activity on their SIM at least once every 180 days. Users can meet this requirement by making a call, sending an SMS, or using mobile data within the specified period.
Postpaid customers must continue to pay their monthly line rent and clear any outstanding dues on time to keep their connections active. Failure to do so may result in suspension or disconnection under existing rules.
Separately, the PTA renewed its warning against fraudulent calls and fake helpline numbers. In an awareness video, the authority cautioned that scammers are impersonating the PTA, the Federal Investigation Agency, and banks to deceive consumers.
The regulator stressed that no government body ever asks for one-time passwords, PINs, CNIC numbers, or biometric details over calls or messages. It urged citizens to remain vigilant and verify information only through official government channels.
The PTA also reminded users to ensure that all SIM cards are registered in their own names. Using a SIM issued in another person’s identity violates telecom regulations and places legal responsibility on the registered holder.
According to the authority, registered consumers remain fully accountable for all calls, messages, and data usage made through their SIM cards. The PTA emphasised the importance of responsible SIM usage for personal security and national telecoms integrity.
