Renowned urologist Prof. Dr. Asif Malik suffered critical injuries in a targeted attack outside his residence in University Town, Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Police said unknown gunmen opened fire on Dr. Malik on Circular Road near his home on Wednesday, leaving him with serious gunshot wounds.
Rescue teams took him to a nearby hospital, where doctors began emergency treatment. Hospital sources said he remains in critical condition under close observation.
Police officials confirmed that they registered a First Information Report at Town Police Station on the complaint of Dr. Malik’s son. Investigators have started a preliminary inquiry to identify and trace the attackers.
Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from the area and collecting witness statements to determine the motive behind the attack. Police had made no arrests by the time of this report.
The Young Doctors Association Khyber Pakhtunkhwa strongly condemned the attack on Prof. Dr. Asif Malik near his residence. A spokesperson said the shooting occurred as the senior urologist was returning home after completing his hospital duty.
The YDA said the attack targeted not only a respected senior doctor, but also heightened fears about the safety and security of the wider medical community in the province.
