The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) initiated discussions to choose candidates for the key governor roles in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P). Insider information pointed to Makhdoom Ahmed Mehmood, Qamar Zaman Kaira, and Nadeem Afzal Chan as leading contenders in Punjab.
This development aligns with emerging power-sharing frameworks between the PPP and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), which on Tuesday confirmed a joint governance strategy for the forthcoming government, ensuring a solid majority in the lower parliamentary house. Following this agreement, PPP leaders are deciding on the Punjab governor nominee. A decision is expected imminently after these discussions.
Concurrently, the party is considering candidates for the K-P governorship, including Syed Muhammad Ali Shah Bacha and others like Syed Zahir Ali Shah. The PPP’s central leadership will approve the governor’s post-new government formation.
Notably, Haji Ghulam Ali has been the K-P governor since November 2022, succeeding Shah Farman from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), with Mushtaq Ghani temporarily filling the role previously.
