The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) recently sounded an alert about potential “low floods” in River Ravi, following India’s release of around 185,000 cusecs of water from the Ujh Barrage.
The Pakistan Commissioner for Indus Waters (PCIW) reported that approximately 65,000 cusecs of the released water will reach the area within the next 20-24 hours. As a result, low flooding is anticipated in the floodplain areas of Punjab’s Jassar region.
Monitoring and Preparedness Measures
In anticipation of the impending floods, the local administration has adopted vigilance, following NDMA’s guidelines and monitoring the situation until July 20. The NDMA has encouraged the public to stay informed and follow administration guidelines.
The local administration and relief agencies have prepared relief camps in strategic areas along rivers and canals to counter any adverse situation. The areas of Hafizabad and Narowal have seen a rise in River Ravi’s water level and subsequent flood warnings.
Amid the possibility of heavy rains in Lahore, Sialkot, and Narowal, flood risks persist for River Sutlej and associated tributaries, including Bhimber, Deg, Palkho, and Basantar.
Two relief camps have also been set up near Kot Ghulam due to the potential flooding in River Chenab. Water flow throughout the region is being actively monitored, with all departments on high alert to handle emergencies.
According to the Irrigation Department, the situation in the Sutlej River is currently reported as normal. Despite this, residents in low-lying areas are being cautioned about potential flood risks.
