Police are supposedly facing string political pressure in the investigation of a case involving the death of a student who allegedly committed self-immolation after he was denied entry into examination hall at a private university, said sources on Thursday.
Abdul Basit succumbed to his burn injuries at a hospital and his family refused to accept the death as an act of suicide, claiming that the student was murdered.
A brother of the deceased has filed an application seeking to register a murder case.
However, a police official said on condition of anonymity that inquiry report confirms Abdul Basit committed suicide by self-immolation. He said since suicide is a criminal offense, the case could only be registered against the deceased.
“The case would be disposed of the moment it is registered,” the official said.
The footage of the incident, was shared with the police in which Basit could be seen lying on the floor and exchanging words with students gathered around him.
The students of the university are seen trying to put out the fire with their gowns.
