Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) senior leader and Federal Minister for Planning, Ahsan Iqbal, has suggested that general elections be conducted across Pakistan simultaneously in October 2023.
The proposal comes as the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM)-led government is scheduled to complete its five-year constitutional term in August.
Speaking at a ceremony in Narowal, Iqbal emphasized that federal and provincial elections should occur concurrently to avoid potential issues arising from early elections in Punjab. He argued that early elections could weaken the federation as the nation faces a constitutional and political crisis. Iqbal also criticized PTI Chairman Imran Khan, calling him a symbol of anarchy that has pushed the country toward destruction.
Meanwhile, Imran Khan, who has been demanding early national elections since his ouster last April, stated that he would be willing to wait until October. However, his decision depends on the PDM-led coalition government’s willingness to provide a roadmap ensuring political stability.
In a related development, PML-N senior leader Javed Latif said that his party would agree to hold general elections after the incumbent government completes its term, provided a ‘level playing field’ is offered to all parties. Latif considered a close aide of Maryam Nawaz, highlighted the need for justice for PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif, who has served as the prime minister three times and contributed to the country’s development and progress. He called for the same justice parameters for everyone, asserting that no one should be above the law.
