Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), major coalition partners in the central government, have reportedly reached a consensus on the “Charter of the Economy.”
The agreement is seen as a crucial step towards addressing the country’s economic crisis. Key leaders from both parties, including Nawaz Sharif from PML-N and Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto from PPP, have been in Dubai to discuss this agreement, alongside other political and economic concerns.
These high-profile leaders met in Dubai earlier this week to decide on the timing of the next general elections in Pakistan and discuss their respective roles in the upcoming government. Sharif and Zardari have concurred on most aspects of the economic charter, which envisages a similar coalition arrangement post the 2023 general elections.
Stalemate on 2023 Election Alliance
Despite this agreement, sources suggest no consensus between the PPP and PML-N over allying the 2023 elections. The composition of the interim government will be decided with consultation from other allied parties. After the expected dissolution of assemblies in August, the two sides have been grappling with disagreements about the timeline for the next general election.
To continue the dialogue, Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari remain in Dubai for further discussions with Sharif and other leaders from the PML-N. More leaders from both parties are expected to travel to Dubai to join the ongoing conversation.
PM Shehbaz Sharif and former president Asif Ali Zardari have repeatedly emphasized the need for a “Charter of Economy.” They believe long-term policies under such a charter are necessary to enhance the country’s economy.
