Karachi: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif arrived in Karachi today on daylong visit during which he will hold meetings with politicians and businessmen.

Upon his arrival, the PM was received by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah and some of the provincial cabinet members along with senior officials, including Sindh Chief Secretary, Muhammad Siddique Memon and Commissioner Karachi.

The Prime Minister was accompanied by Federal Minister for Finance, Ishaq Dar and Federal Minister for Commerce, Khurram Dastagir Khan.

According to Samaa correspondent, the PM is scheduled to inaugurate an oil refinery in Hub industrial area near Karachi, besides meeting members of Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) amid foolproof security arrangements.

Sources said key decisions are likely during the PM’s visit, in the wake of a shocking report of Rangers which revealed that more than Rs.230 billion are being generated annually from Karachiites through extortion and other illegal means, adding that part of the huge amount was also being used for terror-funding, Lyari gang war and criminal activities across the city.

“In Karachi, none other than the top political leaders are godfathering extortionists, land–grabbers, diesel smugglers, gangsters, militants, water-tanker mafia, etc.,” the provincial head of the paramilitary troops said in a briefing given to the Apex Committee, formed under Pakistan’s anti-terror National Action Plan (NAP).
